Leathernecks host Lindenwood in first-ever meeting

Teams will be in Big South-Ohio Valley Football Association next year

MACOMB – A bit of history will be made at Hanson Field on Saturday when the Western Illinois football team meets Lindenwood for the first time on the gridiron. The Leathernecks (0-2, 0-1) and Lions (1-1, 0-1) will meet going forward as the pair will be conference foes in the Big South-Ohio Valley Football Association when Western Illinois joins the league next fall.

LAST WEEK | Western Illinois to an early 9-0 lead on Illinois State but the Redbirds rallied to lead 13-9 at halftime. The Leathernecks cut the deficit to two, 20-18 early in the fourth quarter, but Illinois State pulled away for the 34-18 win. The Lions dropped their OVC opener 45-7 to SEMO. Lindenwood trailed 17-0 after a quarter and 38-0 at halftime.

PLAYERS TO WATCH | Western Illinois:  Bradyn Smith leads the team in tackles with 27 this season, which ranks fifth overall in FCS. His 18 solo tackles and 13.5 tackles per game also rank him fifth … Quarterback Matt Morrissey is 41-73 this year for 453 yards and three touchdowns … Donald McKinney has 10 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown while AJ Coons has 11 receptions for 111 yards. JJ Ross has 13 tackles (two for loss).

Lindenwood: Robert Giaimo has 122 yards rushing and one touchdown this year … Quarterback Cole Dugger is 26-53 with three interceptions and four touchdowns for 385 yards … Chase Lanckreit has five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown … Jeff Coldwell has a team-high seven receptions … Brenden Dye has 13 tackles.

BUSY SATURDAY | This Saturday will be a 90s Football Reunion. Former coach Randy Ball and football alumni from that era will all be on hand for the game. It is also BBQ Cookoff and Family Day. The BBQ Cookoff will be held in Q Lot.

HISTORY | This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

WHAT'S NEXT | Western Illinois returns to the road, flying west to take on Southern Utah in Cedar City next Saturday. This Saturday's home game will be the last at Hanson Field for the Leathernecks until Homecoming against Missouri State on October 14. Lindenwood remains in the Land of Lincoln next week, visiting Illinois State.
