WIU Drops Doubleheader to NDSU

Georgia Rea had another big afternoon, Western hosts SIUE on Tuesday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck softball concluded its weekend series against the North Dakota State Bison on Sunday (April 2), dropping both games in a doubleheader at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. Western Illinois will play six more games in Macomb this season, starting with a doubleheader against the SIUE Cougars on Tuesday (April 4).

Game 1: North Dakota State 1, Western Illinois 0
Sunday's first game saw a pitching duel between Savannah Rodriguez and NDSU's Lainey Lyle. Both teams put runners on base in the first inning but didn't convert, though the Bison found a run on an RBI double in the game's second inning. WIU was able to load the bases with one out in the fourth inning but had back-to-back fielder's choice plays end in an out to keep the game at 1-0 in favor of the Bison. That one run was pivotal as it would prove to be the game's only run.

Maria Luna (2-3) and Savannah Rodriguez (2-3) both had multi-hit performances as Gabriela Drager (1-4), Cynthia Hull (1-3) and Kaylee Ketcherside (1-2) all contributed to seven WIU hits, while Bella Alvarez and Riley Eagan find their way on base with walks. Rodriguez threw a complete game as the team's starting pitcher, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out four of the 27 batters she faced in seven innings of work.

Game 2: Bison 13, Leathernecks 4 (F/5)
The WIU offense came out on a tear in game two, as Georgia Rea hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to score a run just five batters in. Gabriela Drager, who got on after a single up the middle, was joined by Bella Alvarez (single) and Rodriguez (hit by pitch) to load the bases and scored the lead-taking run. Rea's run of hot hitting continued in the third inning, smacking a ball into the trees in left field for her third home run of the season and second in as many days, putting Western up 4-0 through three innings of play.

NDSU quickly responded with eight runs in the top of the fourth before adding another five in the fifth inning to take a 13-4 lead that would hold through the end of the game.

Rea finished 2-3 with four RBI and a run scored, while Bella Alvarez finished 2-3; Drager (1-3, one run scored) and Rodriguez (1-2, one run scored) also contributed to six Leatherneck hits. Emily Price allowed five runs and struck out two in three innings of work while Kathryn McChristy and Savannah Rodriguez also came on to pitch in the game's final two innings.

Western Illinois is back in action on Tuesday (April 4), hosting SIUE at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
