Western Illinois Ends Road Trip with Loss to Wisconsin

Leathernecks return home Thursday

MADISON, Wisc. – The Western Illinois men's basketball team put a run on Wisconsin early in the second half, but it was not enough as the Badgers topped the Leathernecks 71-49 on Monday in Madison.

The Badgers led 35-19 at half, but Western Illinois came out hot in the second half, cutting the deficit to eight. But Wisconsin managed to put together a 21-6 run to pull away and hold off the Leathernecks (2-5).

Western Illinois returns home to Macomb for a three-game home stretch, starting with Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

"At Illinois we put it together for 15 minutes, we put together about 20 tonight and that will come, I'm not frustrated about it, you walk in here, it's a bear trap," WIU coach Chad Boudreau said.

After a slow start, WIU outscored the Badgers 15-7 in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Wisconsin was able to heat up on offense and put the clamps on, pulling away over the next nine minutes, taking a 63-40 lead.

James Dent Jr. led the way for Western Illinois, scoring in double figures for the seventh-straight game, finishing with 17 points. Drew Cisse just missed another double-double, finishing with 11 rebounds and eight points. Cisse added three blocks to the Leathernecks cause.

No other Leatherneck scored in double digits as Ryan Myers totaled eight and Jesiah West chipped in with seven.

As a team, WIU went 15-38 from the field, 15-24 from the line and 4-13 from three. Wisconsin outrebounded Western Illinois 29-23, with their 17-5 advantage in second-chance points proving to be key.
