Leathernecks Hit the Road After Big Victory

Western Illinois begins road trip at Valpo

MACOMB – The Leathernecks tip off a three-game road trip on Tuesday, heading to Valparaiso to take on the Beacons at 7 p.m.
 
Western Illinois comes in at 2-2 while the Beacons are 2-2 overall. The two teams, along with Illinois and Southern University are in the midst of round-robin where all four schools face off in a series of games.

LAST TIME OUT | Western Illinois has won two-straight games, most recently topping Southern University, 88-80 in overtime in Macomb on Friday night. The Leathernecks were led by James Dent Jr., who scored a game-high 24 points, 13 coming in overtime. Quinlan Bennett added 18 while Ryan Myers scored 20 and Drew Cisse added 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
 
ABOUT THE LEATHERNECKS | Dent leads the team, scoring 17.4 points per game, Myers is next with 13.3 while Bennett and Cisse each average 7.5. Western Illinois scores 75.8 points per game while allowing 76.8. WIU is shooting 41.3 percent from the field while allowing foes to make 40.0.
 
ABOUT THE BEACONS | Valparaiso is coming off an 87-64 loss to Illinois on Friday. The Beacons led the Illini 45-38 at half, but Illinois outscored Valpo 49-19 after the break. Isaiah Stafford leads Valpo, averaging 20 points per game. Jaxon Edwards adds 11.8 and Cooper Schweiger chips in with 10.
 
BLOCK PARTY | With the eight blocks on Friday night, Western Illinois leads NCAA Division I in blocks per game, averaging nine per game. Their 36 blocks are also tops in Division I.
 
HISTORY | The Leathernecks and Beacons are no strangers as the pair used to be fierce in the Mid-Con Conference from 1982-2007. Valpo beat WIU three straight times in the Mid-Con Conference Tournament finals and own a 31-23 all-time advantage. Valpo won the last meeting between the two programs, 80-56 in 2007 and has won four-straight games with the last Western win coming on January 22, 2005.
 
WHAT'S NEXT | The Leathernecks return to Macomb for a couple days, then head east again, traveling to Champaign to meet the Illini on Friday at 8 p.m. After a couple days off, the Western Illinois travels north to Wisconsin, taking on the Badgers at 6 p.m. on Monday.
