Leathernecks-Hoosiers meet for first time on gridiron

MACOMB – The puzzle that is the 2024 football schedule became a little clearer for Western Illinois on Thursday as the Leathernecks, along with Indiana University, announced the two schools are meeting in Bloomington for a game on September 7. This is the first time the two programs have ever met on the gridiron.

"With the opportunity to play a Big 10 program that is within our area, this is good for our program and our alumni who live in the Midwest," Western Illinois Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb said. "We've played Big 10 opponents in the past, most recently playing at Minnesota in 2022, so this follows with our history of playing schools in the Power 5 that are in our region and teams our fans are familiar with outside of our league."

Western Illinois is no stranger to Big 10 foes. In the history of the program, the Leathernecks have met Illinois (thrice), Northwestern (once), Wisconsin (thrice), Minnesota (twice), Nebraska (once) and Purdue (once).

Along with the game against Indiana, Western Illinois has already announced a matchup with in-state rival Illinois State (Sept. 14). The complete 2024 schedule, including the Ohio Valley Conference slate, will be released on a later date.

The Leathernecks are in action this weekend, taking on Northern Iowa at 1 p.m.
