WIU look for second-straight win inside Western Hall

MACOMB – The Western Illinois men's basketball team tries to keep the momentum rolling on Friday when they host Southern University inside Western Hall at 7 p.m. The Leathernecks are coming off their first win of the season, topping St. Ambrose 94-59.

GAME NOTES |  Friday is the last home game the Leathernecks play for almost two weeks as they hit the road for a trio of games. WIU is at Valparaiso (Nov. 21), Illinois (Nov. 24) and Wisconsin (Nov. 27) before hosting Hannibal-LaGrange on Nov. 30 ... In three games, the Leathernecks have played three different starting lineups. Quinlan Bennett and Jesiah West are the lone Leathernecks who have started each game. Ryan Myers, Joe Petrakis and Drew Cisse each have started twice…The game features two of the best benches in basketball. Southern's reserves average 42 points per game (16th) while WIU's average 40.33 (23rd) … WIU is second in the country in blocks per game, averaging 9.3. Their 28 blocks overall lead the NCAA.
 
ABOUT THE LEATHERNECKS | James Dent Jr. has been an instant impact for Western Illinois, leading the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game. Dent Jr. has come off the bench in each of the last two contests. Drew Cisse has also made an impact, leading the team in rebounds with 9.3 per night. The Leathernecks are averaging just over 71 points per game while allowing 75. The squad is outrebounding foes 51.3-42.7 per game … The Leathernecks are 11th in the country in rebounding, averaging 51.3 per game.

ABOUT THE JAGUARS | Southern comes in at 1-2 overall and most recently lost to Arizona on Monday night. The Jaguars defeated UNLV 85-71 and lost to TCU 108-75 last week. Southern averages 73 points per game while allowing 92. Tai'Reon Joseph leads the offense, scoring 19.7 points per game.

HISTORY | This is the second all-time meeting between the two programs. Southern University has the lone win between the two schools.

WHAT'S NEXT | Western Illinois hits the road for a trio of games. On Tuesday, the Leathernecks visit Valparaiso. Following that is a Black Friday game at Illinois, then a Monday matchup at Wisconsin. The Leathernecks are next at home Nov. 30 against Hannibal-LaGrange.
