Western Illinois Football Travels to North Dakota

Leathernecks take on Fighting Hawks after bye week

MACOMB – The Western Illinois football team comes out of the bye week this Saturday, taking on North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The Leathernecks are 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference while the Fighting Hawks come in at 2-2 and 0-1. UND lost its last contest, falling to No. 1, South Dakota State 42-21. UND is 3-0 all-time vs. Western Illinois. The Leathernecks are have lost three straight games after a bye, but are 7-3 in their last 10 post-bye week games.

LAST TIME OUT | Western Illinois fell at Southern Utah two weeks ago, 37-17. In that game, the Leathernecks trailed 17-3 before rallying back to force a 17-17 tie at halftime. In the second half, Southern Utah outscored the Leathernecks 20-0.

Matt Morrissey completed 29-48 passes for 268 yards while Jaylin Jackson and Jay Parker each had seven receptions. Jackson finished with 94 yards and a touchdown while Parker had 48 yards. Ludovick Choquette added five catches for 50 yards.

Defensively, Juan DelaCruz led the way with 10 tackles. DelaCruz added a pair of tackles for loss. Bradyn Smith had eight tackles while Anthony Quinney and Ryan Crandall each added seven.

North Dakota trailed 14-0 against SDSU after the first quarter last week and saw the Jacks grow the advantage to as large as 35-7 before UND was able to get back into the game.

Quarterback Tommy Schuster completed 19-24 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown while Red Wilson added five catches for 45 yards.

Malachi Buckned led UND with seven tackles.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH | Western Illinois: Morrissey ranks tops in the MVFC in completions (96) and second in yards (1113) and yards per game (278.3). Parker is fifth in the MVFC in receptions (23) while Jackson is sixth in receiving yards (274) and second in touchdowns (three).

Smith is tied for first in the MVFC in total tackles (41) while DelaCruz is 10th (29).

UND: Wyatt Pedigo leads UND with 26 tackles. Schuster is seventh in MVFC play, averaging 195 passing yards per contest. Bo Belquist is the top target with 27 catches for 319 yards.

HISTORY | UND is 3-0 all-time vs. WIU. North Dakota defeated the Leathernecks 34-10 in their last meeting, October 23, 2021.

WHAT'S NEXT | Western Illinois returns to campus next Saturday, hosting Missouri State for Homecoming. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. North Dakota hosts North Dakota State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
