Leathernecks open home schedule vs. Southern Utah

Western Illinois takes on Thunderbirds

Western Illinois plays in front of the home crowd for the first time this Saturday. The Leathernecks (0-2) open the home portion of the schedule, taking on Southern Utah at 3 p.m. Western Illinois is honoring the 2002 Gateway Conference championship football team at the game.

Previous matchups: Western Illinois is 4-0 in its history against Southern Utah. The Thunderbirds and Leathernecks last met in 2002, with the Leathernecks defeating the Thunderbirds 38-28. Western Illinois defeated Southern Utah 45-6 in 2007, 31-3 in 1998 and 27-20 in 2001.
 
Last time out: The Western Illinois football team went on the road and ran into a tough Minnesota squad on Saturday as the Golden Gophers (2-0) defeated the Leathernecks (0-2) 62-10 at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
 
Nick Davenport would go 8-15 for 125 yards, with one touchdown. Henry Ogala went 8-17 with one interception for 34 yards. On the ground, Ogala led the way, rushing twice for 17 yards. Ludovick Choquette was next with four carries for 16 yards. As a team, Western Illinois ran the ball 19 times for 35 yards. Jafar Armstrong was Western Illinois' leading receiver, hauling in five passes for 72 yards. Brantley added three catches for 52 yards.
 
T.J. Limehouse led the defense with eight tackles while J.J. Ross had seven stops and a pair of pass breakups. Juan De La Cruz also had seven tackle, one for a loss while Bryce Cross had six tackles and a fumble recovery.
 
On special teams, Jack Beulke had seven punts with a long of 48 yards and an average of 37.9. Davenport also punted once, registering a boot of 64 yards.
 
Naseim with honors: Brantley's four receiving touchdowns rates him in a tie for first among FCS receiver. Brantley is averaging 110.5 receiving yards per game, ranking him 14th.
 
Scouting the opponent: Southern Utah is 1-1, beating St. Thomas 44-13 in the season opener, then falling 73-7 to Utah last week… Quarterback Justin Miller is 34-56 for 406 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions… On the ground, 10 different players for Southern Utah had carries in both the St. Thomas and Utah games. Against Utah, Elijah Burns had four carries for seven yards while Grady Robison had two rushes for 27 yards. Against St. Thomas, Isaiah Williams had five totes for 41 yards while Robison carried thrice for 16 yards… In the air, Isaiah Wooden had five catchess for 142 yards vs. St. Thomas, but was shutout vs. Utah. Tim Patrick Jr. had four catches for 17 yards vs. the Utes. Mata'ava Ta'ase has seven catches for 108 yards this season. Josh Dunn leads the SUU defense with 13 total tackles while Rodrick Ward has 12.
