Leatherneck rally falls short at SDSU

WIU rallies from 13 down but can't hold off Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois men's basketball team had its six-game win streak snapped on Thursday night, losing to South Dakota State 71-64 inside Frost Arena in Brookings, South Dakota.

The Leathernecks (8-5 overall, 1-1 in the Summit) trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half but rallied all the way back to take a five point lead, 61-56, with 5:56 to go in the contest. But the Jackrabbits would respond, ending the game with a 15-3 run to even their Summit League mark at 1-1 and improve to 6-8 overall.

Elijah Farr led the rally, coming off the bench to score a season-high 16 points for the Leathernecks. Farr's three-pointer gave Western a 54-52 lead with 8:39 to go. It was Western Illinois' first lead since four minutes remained in the first half, but the Leathernecks could not find an answer for Zeke Mayo, who caught fire late and finished with a game-high 33 points, including 13-straight points during the late SDSU run.

Trenton Massner and Quinlan Bennett each added 15 points apiece for the Leathernecks. Massner added six assists, six rebounds and two steals. Jesiah West finished with eight points, eight rebounds and two steals.

The Leathernecks shot 38 percent from the field while South Dakota State hit 49 percent of its shots. Western Illinois went 15-17 from the line and 7-25 from three. SDSU outrebounded WIU 36-28.

Western Illinois led 26-23 with under six minutes to go in the first half, but South Dakota State closed on a 16-3 run to lead by 10 at the break, 39-29. From there, the Leathernecks went into rally mode, chipping away before taking a lead as big as five, 61-56, but SDSU was able to even the game before the final media timeout and pulled away in the final four minutes.

Western Illinois returns to action on Saturday afternoon, making the trip south to Vermillion, South Dakota to take on South Dakota. The Coyotes are coming off a win over St. Thomas.
