MACOMB – The Western Illinois football team hits the road this weekend looking for a win at Missouri State.
 
The Leathernecks are coming off one of their best performances of the season, falling 28-27 to Youngstown State in the final seconds. After a strong start to the season, the Bears have fallen on hard times, dropping five straight, including their opening four games in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
 
Missouri State has won two straight in the back-and-forth series, which saw the three prior games won by Western Illinois, including the most recent game played at Plaster Stadium.
 
The Bears are led by quarterback Jason Shelley, who is second in the MVFC with 246 yards passing per game. Shelley 135-212 on passes this season with five interceptions and 13 touchdowns. Shelley's favorite target is Tyrone Scott, who is third in the MVFC with 35 catches. His 533 yards ranks him fourth while his four touchdowns are good for fifth. Jacardia Wright leads the ground attack with 499 yards on 105 carries. Defensively, Ferrin Manuleleua leads the way with 54 total tackles, 28 of the solo variety.
 
The Bears average 25 points per game, seventh in the league while allowing 33.9, ninth in the conference. The Leathernecks are 10th in the MVFC in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game while allowing 37.9, 11th in the MVFC.
 
After this game, Western Illinois returns home for a pair of games. The Leathernecks host North Dakota State at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5 followed by Indiana State at 1 p.m. on Nov. 12.
