Leathernecks Close Out Home Slate with Fifth Straight Win

The Leathernecks competed inside Western Hall for the final time this season and collected their fifth straight win.

MACOMB, Ill. - There was plenty to celebrate inside Western Hall Saturday night (Feb. 13). Senior Jake Weyhrich received his "flowers" for his contributions to the program, and the merriment poured into the game as Western Illinois men's basketball closed out its home schedule with an 82-75 win over Denver.

In their final regular-season appearance on LeRoy A. Ufkes Court, four Leathernecks scored in double-digits, and the team collected its fifth straight win.

"We talked about being planted and not buried.  When we were going through that losing early, we were just trying to make sure we weren't buried so that we could blossom into something," said head coach Rob Jeter. "That first game against North Dakota was tough; it was really hard on us, and I was afraid we weren't going to have anything left emotionally. It's been a tough year with all the isolation, the missed family time, and just being a regular college student, but we've shown that fight, that Leatherneck toughness. We were not going to be buried, and it's really good to see these guys blossom."

Western held a commanding 42-28 lead at halftime and continued to apply pressure from there. It never trailed in the second half as the lead swelled to as many as 16 with 5:46 left.

Cameron Burrell recorded back-to-back against the Pioneers, and Saturday's numbers included 13 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. Will Carius again led all scorers on 21 points -- his fourth straight with 20-plus -- while Ramean Hinton and Adam Anhold each added 10.

"This is a lot of fun," said Burrell. "The whole team is enjoying this. It's a lot of fun in the locker room, on and off the court, and it's just a good experience for our team going forward."

After a bye-weekend, the Leathernecks are off to Oral Roberts Saturday, Feb. 27, and Sunday, Feb. 28, for the final contests of the regular season.
