Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

What a wild night.

The Leathernecks battled SDSU in an exciting 83-77 setback.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - It was a wild night in Frost Arena, where the Western Illinois and South Dakota State men's basketball teams battled for an exciting 83-77 finish.

The result didn't favor WIU, but Friday night showed the team with 13 newcomers are on their way to something great. Western led the Jackrabbits most of the opening half and clawed its way out of a 22-point deficit in the second, before eying a two-point difference in the final
minutes.

"To come back on the road against this team, you can't feel bad about that. But again, the question is, why did we have to be down so much? It goes back to that discipline and toughness that we're working to get better at.

"In all, I liked the response. I liked the fight. The competitiveness tonight was really good," said head coach Rob Jeter.

The first 13 minutes of the game belonged to the Leathernecks. They were all gas and no breaks, as Frost Arena watched a 7-0 lead jump out to 20-14 with 8:55 on the clock. Western maintained its edge that entire time, and six different Leathernecks contributed to the score, led by Rod Johnson Jr., who reeled off the night's first five points.

Momentum shifted quickly from there, as the Jackrabbits outscored Western, 27-8, over the next seven minutes to enter halftime up, 41-28. Their lead swelled to 22 with 16:41 left, but Western never yielded.

A second-chance 3-pointer from Colton Sandage pulled the Leathernecks back within single-digits at 67-58 (8:40), and in just his third game since returning from injury, back-to-back layups from Adam Anhold made the score 72-70.

Anhold wrapped the night with a season-high, team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Ramean Hinton finished with 13 points, Justin Brookens 12, and Will Carius 10.

Rod Johnson Jr. was a rebound and point short of a double-double.

The series between WIU and SDSU continues Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
