MACOMB, Ill. - One of the greatest quarterback/wide receiver duos in Western Illinois football history - Jaelon Acklin and Sean McGuire - have both resigned with their professional teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The tandem last met in the 107th Grey Cup Championship, where McGuire's Blue Bombers won 33-12 while Acklin finished with a game-high 88 receiving yards on five catches.
Acklin, a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, was named the team's Most Outstanding Rookie last year as he led all CFL rookies in receptions (57), receiving yards (701), and targets (71). He started 16 games at receiver and caught three touchdowns to help lead the Ticats' to a 15-3 campaign.
McGuire will begin his second season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Last season he dressed in all 18 regular season and postseason games. The QB appeared in two games and completed two of three passes for 17 yards and rushed three times for 19 yards.
As one of the best tandems in Western history, the former roommates helped WIU to FCS Playoff appearances in 2015 and 2017. The 2017 season saw Acklin set the school's single-season records with 84 receptions and 1,369 receiving yards, while McGuire graduated a year later as the program's all-time leading passer with records in passing yards (9,819), completions (772), and touchdowns (72).
