Rain Shortens Spring Break Opener, WIU Falls to USC Upstate

The Leathernecks drop 7-0 contest on Tuesday (March 10).

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Originally supposed to be a doubleheader, the Western Illinois women's team (0-9) and USC Upstate (2-14) played one match due to rain in the area on Tuesday (March 10). 

The Spartans defeated the Leathernecks 7-0. 

WIU fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point as the opposition clinched the point with a 6-1 victory in No. 2 doubles. 

In singles play, State went on to sweep all five matches. Laura Ballesteros (No. 1) was edged 6-2, 7-5, and Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 3) battled hard in a 6-1, 7-5 setback. Lucky Kancherla (No. 2) dropped 6-2, 6-2, Ericka Dawson (No. 4) lost 6-0, 6-0, and Mara Vidal (No. 5) fell 6-0, 6-1. 

The Purple and Gold continue the spring break slate in Hilton Head, S.C. against Radford on Thursday (March 12) and Norfolk State Friday (March 13).
