Late Rally Not Enough

Western's first game in Memphis' Blue City Classic resulted in a 6-2 loss.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –  The Western Illinois softball team rallied late but were unable to turn the page in a 6-2 decision to Northwestern State in game one of the Blues City Classic (Feb. 28).

The Demons were eyeing a no-hitter through the bottom of the fourth inning until Halle Hollatz put an end to the bid with a single to left field. She recorded one of Western's two hits of the afternoon, while Maddy Anderson battled from the circle in four innings of work.

NSU put four runs on the board during Anderson's appearance, but the freshman righty was only responsible for two. A throwing error in the fourth allowed Northwestern to sneak in two, and by the end of the frame, it held a 4-0 advantage.

With patience, the Leathernecks were able to cut their deficit in half. Alyssa Ealy led off the sixth inning by reaching base on a throwing error before back-to-back walks saw a Leatherneck standing at each square.

Ealy scored on a wild pitch, and Ashley Minyard crossed home plate on an NSU throwing error. Things sat at 4-2 at the end of the inning, but the Demons sent a 2-RBI home run to center field in the next.

The Leathernecks take two Saturday with Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. and tournament host Memphis at 6:30 p.m.
