Western Illinois Athletics Discontinues Swimming & Diving Program

MACOMB, Ill. -  Western Illinois University Athletics will discontinue its swimming and diving program effective immediately, the department announced Friday (Dec. 18). 

Due to COVID-19 and other fiscal challenges associated with the program, it was suspended for the 2020-21 season. Administration had indicated it would provide a status update at the end of the current fall semester. 

"This is difficult news to share, and certainly not the outcome we wanted. As we continue to feel the impact of COVID, we must consistently evaluate the department's financial position and work to ensure its viability," said Director of Athletics Danielle Surprenant. "Our priority and commitment are to provide support for our student-athletes during this difficult time." 

Interim President Martin Abraham added, "It is unfortunate that we need to discontinue this program at this time. We are no longer able to afford to support this in a manner that is fair to our student-athletes. I know how difficult this will be for the team and all of those who have participated in swimming and diving in prior years." 
 
Athletic scholarships will continue to be honored for affected student-athletes who wish to return to Western Illinois University, and are guaranteed through the remainder of their athletic eligibility period.
