Leathernecks Visit The Centennial State in Week 2

Week 2 of the 2019 season will pit the Leathernecks against Colorado State.

The Series | With back-to-back road games, the Leathernecks are kicking off their 2019 season against first-time opponents (North Alabama, Colorado State).
 
Western's Last Outing | Western Illinois began its 2019 season on the road Thursday night where scores were plenty in the first half, but in the end, North Alabama claimed the decision, 26-17.
 
Twenty-seven points were scored in the second quarter alone, and after each Western score, the Lions responded with one of their own. Deontez Thompson's rushing TD (4:08) was met with a 75-yard touchdown pass (3:57). And, when Western blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone (1:39), North Alabama converted a field goal as time expired. At halftime, the score read 19-14 in favor of UNA.

Us vs. Them | Western has eight FBS victories under its belt including back-to-back wins in the 2017 and 2016 seasons. Its most recent outing against an FBS opponent resulted in a 14-34 setback at Illinois last year.

Leatherneck Debuts | Western found the end zone for the first time of the 2019 season when Deontez Thompson punched through the gap for a nine-yard rush (North Alabama). The senior RB was one of eight starters who made their Leatherneck debut in the season-opener.
 
Brian Woodard (Jr. / RG), Brandon Malkow (R-Fr. / RT), Dennis Houston (Jr. / RB), Marquis Smith (Jr. / CB), Demetri Royer (R-Jr. / S), and Ziare Williams (R-Fr. / CB) joined Thompson as starters in their first-ever appearance as Leathernecks.
 
First Career Start | In his first collegiate start, quarterback Connor Sampson went 18-30 at North Alabama with 183 yards and one interception.
 
He appeared in six games a season ago and four in 2017.
 
The Graduates | The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame released its annual list of student-athletes who are playing college football this fall with their undergraduate degrees already in hand, and Western Illinois tied for fourth in the FCS with eight.

Next Up | The Leathernecks will welcome Montana State to Hanson Field next Saturday at 3 p.m. The home-opener is also Family Day, and fans are encouraged to wear their gold Leatherneck apparel to the game.
