Tennis Defeats Hawks, 6-1

Leathernecks overcome injuries on the road

QUINCY, Ill. –Despite playing with only five players, the Western Illinois women's tennis team defeated the Quincy Hawks 6-1 on Friday (March 1).

"A couple of our girls are injured this weekend, so we competed with only five players, but all of them played well against a young Quincy team," said Mirko Bjelica.

The Leathernecks now improve to 3-4, and Quincy falls to 2-4.

WIU claimed an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. Ana Bjelica and Mary Bjelica picked up their second dual match victory together this spring in 6-2 wins over Abby Moore and Rita Kanaeva in No. 2 doubles. Laura Ballesteros and Megan Tagaloa clinched the doubles point on a 6-3 defeat of Nicole Lao and Makaela Hampton in No. 1 singles.

The match was even up due to a default victory in the No. 6 singles flight, but the Western stayed hot and won five straight matches.

Ana Bjelica (No. 1), Mary Bjelica (No. 2) and Ballesteros (No. 3) each beat their matchups 6-2, 6-2 to eventually clinch the dual match victory. Tagaloa shutout Moore 6-0, 6-0 for third dual match victory in her freshman campaign. Camryn Rossa rounded out singles to stay a perfect 3-0 and limited Anna Konczak to one point in a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles.

The Purple and Gold continue the weekend action against in-state rival Illinois State tomorrow with first serve set for 1 p.m.
