Mavericks Shoot Past Leathernecks

Western Illinois let up 11 shots from deep in a 77-63 loss at Omaha.

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Illinois (8-18, 3-10) men's basketball team surrendered eight second half 3-pointers to the Omaha Mavericks (17-9, 11-2) in a 77-63 road loss on Wednesday night (Feb. 20).

"I thought we did a good job controlling the tempo in the first half," head coach Billy Wright said. "We made Omaha take and miss some tough shots. I thought our guys played hard but give Omaha credit for catch and fire in the second half. Our guys were there with a hand in their face but sometimes you have to step up to find a way to make them miss."

A Brandon Gilbeck put-back tied the game 5-5 heading into the under-16 media timeout. The Mavericks led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Gilbeck spun for a layup in the paint to draw Western within one possession trailing 27-25 with 2:25 left. A step-back left wing trifecta by Kobe Webster handed the Leathernecks a 30-29 with only 55 seconds ticking in the first half. Omaha scored the final four points before heading to the locker room with a 33-30 advantage over the visitors from Macomb.

That stretch transformed into a 13-2 run capped by a Matt Pile dunk that forced Wright to call a timeout at the 16:49 mark down 42-32. A corner triple immediately after the timeout from C.J. Duff drew Western Illinois within seven but Omaha proceeded to have a frenzy from beyond the arc to pull away in the second half.

Webster paced the Leathernecks in scoring again with 17 points while dishing out three assists. Duff had 13 points with three helpers as well while Isaac Johnson added 13 and six rebounds. Gilbeck recorded his fifth double-double of the season after a 10 point and 10 rebound performance.

The Leathernecks return home for senior night against Oral Roberts on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
