Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wrapping Non-League Action with a Win

Western's men will enter Summit League play on a success.

MACOMB, Ill. – It's always great to get a win, and it's even greater to enter Summit League action on a success.

The Western Illinois men's basketball team concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule Thursday night (Dec. 19) with a 91-64 decision over Holy Family College (Wisc.). Kobe Webster and Ben Pyle joined forces to combine for half of Western's points, as the former poured in a game-high 21 while Pyle added 20.

The Leathernecks secured their advantage on a 7-0 run at the 17:10-mark of the first quarter and never looked back.

"Holy Family is a well-coached team, and they were coming off of two wins, so they had some momentum," said head coach Billy Wright. "They did some things with their guards, and gave us some problems, but hats off to our guys. We were alert and disciplined and did a really good job at getting at their shooters and making them miss.

"It was a good test for us. We got a lot of guys who got a lot of minutes, and I'm happy we got one."

Heading into league play, the Leathernecks used Thursday's tune-up to provide their newcomers extra minutes. All available student-athletes suited up in the contest, and the Leatherneck bench recorded 25 points.

En route to nine points, Jaeden King dazzled the crowd for a pair of contested dunks while Kyle Arrington contributed eight and Roderick Smith a team-high, career-high eight rebounds.

Western entered halftime up, 46-24, shooting 50 percent from the field (18-36), and limited the Lakers to just nine makes.

Following the holiday break, South Dakota will be the first Summit League competitor to enter Western Hall. The league opener is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
