Marlow Leads Leathernecks' Offense Past Coyotes For Series Sweep

WIU scored 20 runs on 25 hits

VERMILLION, S.D. – After a nearly five-hour delay, the Leathernecks exploded for 20 runs on 25 hits, to beat South Dakota 20-12 to complete the sweep, the first time ever in program history WIU has swept the Coyotes. The Leathernecks' 25 hits rank second all-time while 20 runs ties for first.

Individually, Kelsey Marlow finished the day 5-for-6, which breaks the all-time record for hits in a game. Five Leathernecks (Hailey Duwa, Halle Hollatz, Sydney Hollings, Sidney Bottino and Rachel Beatty) all recorded three hits, while Ashely Minyard and Payton Abbot each recorded two.

"Today we knew we had to come out with a bang with offense. South Dakota is a great hitting team, and I told the girls to expect it, but we just kept pushing," said head coach Beth Golitko. "We never gave up. I am so proud of the girls today. Again, we trusted each other to fight for that win. I could not be more proud of this team."

Western Illinois took the lead in the first inning of play after Payton Abbott crushed a double off of the right field wall to score Ashley Minyard. The Coyotes loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but only could manage one run off a wild pitch.

The Leathernecks tacked on three runs in the second inning after Bottino singled to center field to score Hollings and Marlow tripled, scoring Beatty and Bottino. The Coyotes tied up the game in the bottom of the second. The Purple and Gold did not let the tie game last very long, as they put together a six-run third inning. Hollatz began the inning with a single and Hollings brought her home with a homerun to right field. With the bases loaded, Marlow singled to the pitcher and plated Bottino. Duwa cleared the bases with a double to put the Leathernecks up, 10-4.

Down 10-5 in the fourth inning, South Dakota tacked on seven runs, to take the lead, 12-10. The fourth inning ended as the only frame the Leathernecks did not score.

With Minyard on third with one out, Hollatz flied to left field to bring home Minyard to cut the Coyote lead to just one run.

Payton Abbott held the Coyotes scoreless in the final two innings, and the Leathernecks tacked on five runs in the fifth and four runs in the seventh inning.

WIU took the lead for the final time in the sixth inning, after Marlow brought home Beatty and Bottino to go up 13-12. Marlow scored on a wild pitch to score the third run of the inning, putting the Leathernecks up 14-12. WIU was not satisfied with the two-run advantage, and Hollings plated Abbott and Duwa.

Duwa earned her fourth and fifth RBI of the game in the seventh inning as she singled to score Marlow and Minyard. The final Leatherneck runs came when Hollatz doubled to left field and scored Abbott and Duwa.

WIU opens its home slate on April 7 to begin a three-game slate against Fort Wayne. First pitch is set for noon.
