Boone Impresses In Day Two Of Rock Chalk Challenge

The Leathernecks fell 5-1 to Northern Colorado and 5-4 to Saint Louis

LAWRENCE, KAN.- The Western Illinois softball team fell against the University of Northern Colorado, 5-1, and Saint Louis, 5-4, in the second day of the Rock Chalk Challenge on Friday. Madison Boone made her first career start against the Billikens and recorded three RBIs while reaching base during each of her four at-bats. Additionally, she logged two assists with no errors at third base.

GAME ONE

On a windy and cold morning at Rock Chalk Park, the Leathernecks and the University of Northern Colorado Bears competed in the second game of the Rock Chalk Challenge. The first three innings of play were scoreless, with just two hits on the scoreboard for each squad.

Western Illinois put two runners on base in the fourth inning on a Hailey Duwa walk and Halle Hollatz single, but neither advanced across home plate.

With two outs and two runners on for Northern Colorado, the Bears doubled down the left field line to take the first lead of the game. The two-out rally continued, as the Bears singled, adding two more runs, and then doubled, tacking on another pair to take the 5-0 advantage.

With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, the Leathernecks plated their first run of the contest when Hollatz hit the ball to the diving second baseman for the Bears, which scored Ashley Minyard.

Jasmine Lara singled in the seventh inning, but Western Illinois could not do any damage in the final inning of play.

GAME TWO

The Billikens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after doubling down the left field line. The second run came with two outs in the first frame, after the ball got caught in the wind flying to center field and Lara was not able to get under the ball.

The Leathernecks left five runners on base between the first and second innings, before Saint Louis extended its lead in the third frame with a two-run homerun to left center field.

Loading the bases for the second time on the day, Western plated several to tie the game at 4-4 in the third. Hollatz led off the inning with a walk, and was joined on base by Duwa and Ira. Sidney Bottino drove in the first run of the afternoon with a single to right field, and in just her third at-bat of the season, Madison Boone cleared the bases with a double to right field.

Saint Louis regained the lead, 5-4, in the fifth inning with an RBI-single to center field.

The Leathernecks wrap up play at the Rock Chalk Challenge tomorrow (March 17) against Murray State at 9 a.m.
