IUPUI Slips Past Western Illinois

The Jaguars ended the game on a 12-0 run to top the Leathernecks, 82-68.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— The Western Illinois (4-7) men's basketball team led at halftime, but IUPUI (8-3) surged past the Leathernecks late in an 82-68 road setback on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 15).

"I thought both teams competed really hard," head coach Billy Wright said. "Both teams made a run, we could have our heads down late in the second half when IUPUI made the run, but I was proud of our guys sticking with it. Both teams made runs down the stretch but give IUPUI credit for making more plays."

The two squads exchanged baskets early on and Kobe Webster playing in his hometown, drained a wing three-pointer to put Western ahead 12-10 with 13:38 left in the first half. Down 27-24, Jordan Hughes ripped down an offensive rebound and connected on a layup to help the Leathernecks keep pace at the 7:25 mark. Late in the first half, Ben Pyle tied the game on a put-back with 22 seconds remaining and handed Western Illinois s a 40-39 halftime lead on a layup in the waning seconds.

Three minutes into the second half, the Leathernecks created their largest advantage of the game, 48-39 after a layup from Brandon Gilbeck. The Purple and Gold trailed 61-53 at the halfway point of the second half before taking the lead on a 9-0 run capped off by another inside basket by Gilbeck with 6:59 to go.

A couple minutes later, the Jaguars kept fighting and Zion Young had to drain a corner three to tie the game at 65-65. Camron Justice immediately answered with a trey of his own. IUPUI closed the game on a 12-0 run after Webster cut the deficit to 70-68 with 3:57 left in regulation.

Webster finished with a team-high 19 points while C.J. Duff added 13 points and five assists. Brandon Gilbeck scored eight points and pulled in eight rebounds while Jordan Hughes scored a career-high eight points.

The Leathernecks have a quick turnaround to play at Northern Illinois on Monday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m.
