Leathernecks Crack Win Column in Blowout Fashion

Five Leathernecks score in double-figures to defeat North Park 84-56.

MACOMB, Ill.— The Western Illinois (1-1) men's basketball team cruised past North Park 84-56 for its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10).

"It's always good to get a home win in front of our fans," head coach Billy Wright said. "Obviously, there are some things we could have done better but give North Park credit. They run a motion style offense and it really put our bigs in some difficult situations. It's great for us to see that because there are some teams in our league moving forward that mobile bigs and smaller players that can dribble and shoot from three. We can adjust and work on it."

Ben Pyle opened the game with a three-pointer from the right wing to get Western on the board first. The advantage first grew to double-figures with 11:27 left in the first half after Zion Young put back his own miss for a 21-11 lead. Two minutes later, James Claar was in the right place at the right time with a put-back dunk as the Leathernecks led North Park 25-11. The purple and gold kept extending the margin while Kobe Webster sank a trifecta to send the game to halftime up 40-20.

Western Illinois opened the second half on an 8-1 run to set the tone. After a fast-break layup by CJ Duff, the Leathernecks were in control 52-25 with 14:37 remaining. The lead grew to its largest of the day at 74-38 on a slam by Claar with 6:17 to go.

The Vikings showed life late in the game connecting on six threes in the final five minutes including four treys by Vegard Tangen, but it was not enough as the Leathernecks coasted to an 84-56 home-opening victory.

Webster paced all scorers with 21 points while hauling in eight rebounds. Isaac Johnson was one rebound away from a double-double after collecting 14 points and nine rebounds. Duff also scored 14 points while Claar and Pyle both totaled 11 points to round off the double-digit scoring.

The Leathernecks are back in action at home on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. against Dominican University.
