Leathernecks Cage Tigers In Final Exhibition

Kobe Webster leads all scorers with 22 points

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Leathernecks never trailed in their final exhibition game of the 2018-19 season on Thursday (Nov. 1) and cruised past Iowa Wesleyan, 108-64, inside Western Hall.
 
Kobe Webster led the Leathernecks with 22 points, four assists and four rebounds. The sophomore was effective behind the arc for the second game in a row as he knocked down six 3-pointers. Five Leathernecks ended in double-digit points as Webster (22), Isaac Johnson (17), Zion Young (15), C.J. Duff (11) and Ben Pyle (10) all scored the ball effectively.
 
The Leathernecks jumped out to a 12-3 lead after a Brandon Gilbeck slam and never looked back.  Western Illinois pushed its lead to 21 after Young found Montague for a 3-pointer to put the Leathernecks up 29-8 with 9:51 to play. The Purple and Gold took a 34-point advantage going into halftime after Gilbeck made two free throws with five seconds left.
 
Going into the break, Webster had 15 and Pyle and Duff collected eight points. As a team, the Leathernecks were 9-for-15 from deep and shot 50 percent from the field.
 
The scoring did not stop for the Purple and Gold in the second half, as the Leathernecks knocked down two 3-pointers just two minutes into the second half. Duff hit the first one while Johnson netted the second to give the Leathernecks a 61-24 lead. The home team hit the century mark with 3:10 to go in the second half after James Claar executed a post move for two points for a 101-62 advantage. Otis Dorth made two free throws for the Leathernecks' final to points of the game as the contest ended 108-64.
 
Gilbeck ended with nine points and nine rebounds Montague netted nine points and pulled down a pair of rebounds.
 
The Leathernecks begin their season on Tuesday (Nov. 6) against Creighton in Omaha.
