BILLY WRIGHT POSTGAME RADIO INTERVIEW

MACOMB, Ill. –
Fighting Leatherneck men's basketball jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in their 95-48 victory over Oak Hills Christian Sunday evening (Nov. 13) inside Western Hall.

"It was a good win for us and I thought we had a chance to play a lot of guys. We had a quick turn around from (last) Friday night, getting back at 5:30 in the morning, we had practice last night and walk through this morning so we wanted to make sure we got off to a good start and I thought our defense anchored that," said head coach Billy Wright.

Western Illinois moves to 1-1 after the win, while Oak Hills Christian falls to 0-8 on the season.

Western opened the game on a 28-2 run through the first 10 minutes of action. The Wolfpack would attempt to chip away at WIU's lead for the remainder of the first, but the Leathernecks took a 26-point lead into the break, 47-21.

The second half was all Western as well. WIU opened the second on a 9-0 run and cruised the rest of regulation on its way to the Leathernecks' first victory of the season.

"(Our defense) allowed us to get out in transition and score some easy points in transition, which allowed us to keep that pressure going. Overall pleased with our guards ability to rebound the ball, you look at C.J. Duff who had 10 rebounds, Dalen (Ancrum) had eight and Garret (Covington) had six… and a combined two turnovers amongst our four guards that started, I'm very pleased with their ability and their efficiency on both ends of the floor tonight."

Garret Covington and Dalan Ancrum led Western with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Ancrum also grabbed eight rebounds, had three assists and blocked two shots, while Covington added six rebounds and an assist to his stat line.

Three other Leathernecks also scored in double figures in Jabari Sandifer, Jalen Morgan and Lynrick Moxey who each finished with 10 points.

Pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds was C.J. Duff. He also scored eight points and dished out four assists.

Delo Bruster finished with a team-high six assists in the victory.

As a team, WIU bettered Oak Hills Christian in nearly every category, including rebounds (52-21), assists (25-12), blocks (8-0), steals (8-5) and turnovers (11-14).

Oak Hills Christian was led by Duke Abalos and Moe Blackmon who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Western continues its home slate Wednesday when Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) comes to town. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside Western Hall and the contest is schedule to air live on ESPN3.
