Three-Run Seventh Not Enough as Western Falls to St. Bonaventure

The Leathernecks dropped a 5-4 decision to the Bonnies on Thursday (March 12).

HONOLULU, Hi. - Western Illinois scored three runs in the top of the seventh but needed one more, falling 5-4 to St. Bonaventure on Thursday (March 12). The loss moves Western to 6-6 on the year.

"I'm proud of the way we were able to fight back and give ourselves a chance in the seventh," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "Our energy wasn't there early in the game and that's something we need to work on the rest of the season."

Brooke Stulga got the nod, making her third career start. The freshman was forced to work out of a jam in the first after the first two Bonnies reached. With runners at second and third, Stulga was able to get out the inning with no damage done on the scoreboard. Neither team was able to produce any runs in the second, when the game took a turn in the third.

With one out, Sammy Marshall singled and moved to third on an error, but the senior would be stranded at third. In the bottom half of the frame, the Bonnies used a one-out double and an error to score the first run on a ground out. Two pitched later, St. Bonaventure hit a two-run homer to center, taking a 3-0 lead into the fourth.

Western immediately responded, as Tierney Bottino singled to lead off the fourth, and moved to fourth on the very next at-bat. Holly Hoelting hit a sac fly to right, scoring Bottino and cutting the lead to 3-1.

But the Bonnies scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to 5-1 heading into the seventh.

In the seventh, Lia Romeo came off the bench and hit a double to center to lead off the inning. Karissa Kouchis promptly followed with a single to right and Marshall reached on a single, forcing an error as well to allow Romeo to score. Teagan Walsh brought in both Kouchis and Marshall on a single to right, cutting the lead to 5-4. Bottino collected her second hit of the game, moving runners to first and second, but the Leathernecks could not push the final run across, falling 5-4.

Walsh, Bottino, and Kouchis all finished with two base hits. Stulga was hit with the loss, moving the freshman to 1-1.

The Leathernecks will face Virginia Tech on Friday (March 13) as the 2015 Rainbow Wahine Classic continues in Honolulu, Hawaii. First pitch between the Leathernecks and Hokie is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Hawaii.
