STATS Names Sean McGuire National Freshman of the Week

Redshirt-freshman quarterback threw for 332 yards in his first-ever WIU start

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Western Illinois redshirt-freshman quarterback Sean McGuire (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) became the third Leatherneck this year to earn national recognition from STATS as he was named 'National Freshman of the Week' by the news organization.

McGuire, who was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week, joins Lance Lenoir (Special Teams/Sept. 7) and Brett Taylor (Honorable Mention Defensive/Oct. 5) in receiving the weekly accolade.

Making his first collegiate start, McGuire completed 29-of-44 passes for 332 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in the 37-30 overtime win at Indiana State. He also rushed for 28 yards (averaging 4.7 yards per carry) and scored a touchdown. That passing yardage total just missed on the 'Top 20' list for single-game total (12 shy).

The Leathernecks were down by 17 early in the third quarter when he connected with Joey Borsellino on a 78-yard touchdown, the longest pass completion by Western in four years. The victory not only moved the program to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the MVFC. It was also Western's second-biggest comeback in program history.

Western closes out the regular season this Saturday looking to keep its playoff hopes alive.
