Men’s Basketball Suffers First League Loss of the Year at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Fighting Leatherneck men's basketball dropped their first Summit League game of the season Wednesday evening (Jan. 7) at South Dakota State, 75-44.
 
Western Illinois drops to 7-7 overall on the season and 2-1 in league play, while SDSU improves to 10-7 on the year and earns its first league win of the season (1-2).
 
WIU was able to hang around for the first portion of the opening period before South Dakota State built its lead up to double digits. It was all Jackrabbits for the rest of the game as SDSU took a 14-point lead into halftime, and built its advantage up to as much as 33 in the second half.
 
Sophomore guard Garret Covington and junior guard J.C. Fuller led the way for Western in the scoring column, each finishing with 11 points. Covington also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the defeat.
 
Dishing out a team-best four assists was Jabari Sandifer.
 
The Leathernecks struggled to find any rhythm shooting the ball, connecting on only 31 percent of its shots from the field (18-of-58), 22.2 percent from long range (4-of-18), and 44.4 percent from the free throw line (4-of-9).
 
South Dakota State outrebounded WIU by 11 (42-31), had four less fouls (13-17), committed one less turnover (13-14), and tallied four more assists in the contest (13-9).
 
Western will look to get back on track at home Saturday when Oral Roberts comes to town. The Leathernecks and Golden Eagles are slated for a 7 p.m. tip following the WIU's women's game versus South Dakota.
