Alabama State Defeats Western Illinois Men's Basketball Monday

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Senior Adam Link scored a game-high 16 points, and Jordan Foster matched his career high with 11 points, but it wasn't enough as Western Illinois fell to Alabama State on the road, 59-52.

The loss snaps a WIU three-game win streak and the Leathernecks fall to 4-5 overall on the year after the defeat. The ASU Hornets improve to 4-3 overall after the victory.

"Alabama State has some tradition, people don't realize that," said head coach Jim Molinari. "You look up and they have a beautiful arena, and you see that they have been to four NCAA tournament's since 2000. Their coach does a great job, so I give them credit. As far as our team, we played the way we have to play, but we fouled too much. Mike (Ochereobia) could only play 22 minutes, he had five fouls. Tate (Stensgaard) was in foul trouble. To me that is kind of the real situation."

Besides his game-high 16 points, Link also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, dished out two assists and tallied a block.

Foster was the only other Leatherneck to score more than 10 points (11). Foster went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while also recording a rebound, an assist, and a steal.

Freshman Garret Covington tallied seven points and grabbed six boards.

Two Alabama State players finished in double figures in Jamel Waters who finished with 15 points and DeMarcus Robinson who tallied 10.

WIU out-rebounded the Hornets, 41-32, but lost the turnover battle, 15-11. Both teams shot just under 40% from the field with ASU edging WIU, 39.6% to 39.3%

Western committed 21 fouls to Alabama State's nine, and Leathernecks were only able to get to the free throw line four times during the game.

Western continues its road trip in Logan, Utah with the Basketball Travelers Classic. The Leathernecks will play three games in three days beginning with hosts Utah State Thursday evening at 9:05 (CT).
