Men's Soccer Stumbles In Summit League Loss At Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshmen Ken Tryggestad and Maclean Johnson tallied their first collegiate points, but it wasn't enough as the Western Illinois men's soccer team fell to Oakland 5-1 in a Summit League match at OU Soccer Field on Saturday night.

The Leathernecks drop to 2-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in The Summit League, while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 6-3, 2-0.

After Western Illinois took the first two shots of the game, Oakland went on the attack, taking 14 straight shots to end the half, three of which found the back of the net.

Matt Dudley scored at the 30 minute mark and Lucas Diener converted on a penalty kick less than a minute later.

Joey Tinnion made it 3-0 with a goal in the 44th minute, closing a first half in which the Leathernecks were outshot 14-2.

Jeff Chislik became the fourth Golden Grizzly to score, finding the back of the net in the 55th minute to make the score 4-0.

Tryggestad scored his first collegiate goal in the 75th minute, as Johnson picked up his first assist as a Leatherneck, too. Senior Nathan Bruinsma also picked up an assist on the play.

Oakland quickly responded, as Tinnion scored his second goal of the game a minute later to complete the scoring at 5-1.

The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Leathernecks 21-8, led by Diener who finished with a goal and two assists.

Western Illinois will look to rebound on Wednesday, traveling to Drake for a nonconference game at 7 p.m.
