Fighting Leathernecks Roll Past South Dakota for Perfect Week


MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's soccer (9-2-0, 2-0-0) shut out South Dakota (1-8-3, 0-1-1) 2-0 on Sunday (September 30) to remain perfect on the week and in Summit League play. Senior captain Katie Condon headed in both of the squad's goals, which ranks her third in school history in goals scored in a match.

The Leathernecks controlled possession of the futbol for the majority off the match and earned a result in the 21st minute of play when Condon got her head on a Kellie Julius cross. The assist was Julius' fifth of the season.

In the second half, Condon connected with a cross off the foot of Amy Bennett for her second header goal of the match in the 55th minute of play. The play marked Condon's fifth goal of the year and Bennett's first assist.

The back line and keeper Laura Atkinson continued to perform in dominant fashion, limiting the Coyotes to two shots in the first half of play and six in the second. Atkinson picked up her third shutout of the season, tallied four saves and improved her record to 5-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in league play.

Western's 33 goals on the year ranks them fourth in school history in goals in a season with seven matches remaining in the regular season.

When asked about the importance of taking an early lead, head coach Ted Flogaites said, "We're now two-eighths of the way to the conference tourney. You don't want to lose at home, its important to pick up points in conference play. It's really important to get up and out front and have teams chase us.”

The Leathernecks return to the pitch on Wednesday (October 3) at home against Drake. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
