PEORIA, Ill.  -  Monique Houston killed a season-high seven balls and collected three total blocks, as Western Illinois volleyball fell to Austin Peay State 3-0.Up 2-0 in game three, Austin Peay broke away from Western with 12 straight points that left WIU down 23-12, and finished the match 30-18. A close game two saw the teams tie 12 times, and exchange leads four, but APSU got the best of Western, 30-26. Patty Melinauskas highlighted the stanza for WIU, tallying five kills on seven attempts.Monique Houston found a groove in the first game, netting five kills and a .455 hitting percentage. But her efforts were nullified by a 7-0 Lady Gov run, which gave APSU a 16-9 lead. The Westerwinds responded to the run with a 7-3 spurt, but were unable to recover from the deficit, falling 30-23 in the opening game.In addition to Houston, Patty Melinauskas played well for the Westerwinds, going 8-for-19 on attacks and tallying three blocks. Freshman Erin Frick led WIU in blocks with 4, and also had 6 kills in the match.Western Illinois hit a season-high .246 and garnered seven team blocks.The Westerwinds open up their home season Sept. 8-9 at the WIU Pizza Hut Invitational, featuring DePaul, Butler and Eastern Illinois.
