Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches at UWGB

The Western Illinois University volleyball team split its final non-conference tournament matches of the season Saturday by defeating North Dakota State, 3-1 (30-32, 30-24, 30-21, 30-22), before falling to host Wisconsin-Green Bay, 1-3 (31-29, 26-30, 20-30, 27-30). Sophomore Amy Sauerwein (Belleville, Ill./Belleville Althoff Catholic) and senior Jenna Yurs (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards/Elgin C.C.) were named to the Amerihost Inn Classic All-Tournament Team after three solid performances each in the two-day tourney at Green Bay, Wis.Western (4-7) bounced back from an early 30-32 game one loss against North Dakota State (0-12) to win the following three in decisive fashion. Western trailed the Bison early on in the second game, but came back late after two NDSU attack errors and a kill by Yurs. In game three, Western held the Bison to a match-low .128 average to its .279 for a 30-21 win. Western Illinois led from the very beginning of the game, and held on to its nine-point lead at 27-19 to win the game on a trio of kills by sophomore Ashley Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Effingham [Ill.]) and freshman Monique Houston (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling). Western clinched the match with a 30-22 victory in game four while hitting a match-high .378. Baker tallied seven of her 14 kills in the final game, and averaged a career-high .571 throughout the match.Freshman Sarah Trimpe (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) posted Western?s lone double-double with a match-high 53 assists and 10 digs. Yurs notched 13 kills and two block assists, and Sauerwein finished with 14 kills and nine digs. Houston tallied 19 digs and seven kills, and sophomore Mary Olson (Elkhart, Ill./Mount Pulaski) added eight kills and four blocks (two solo, two assists).North Dakota State had three players with double-digit kill performances, including Kelly Lopez who finished with 13 kills and 14 digs. Bethany Boelter added 31 assists and Kari Fagnan added 18 digs.Western was unable to finish the tournament undefeated despite taking a 31-29 game one win against Wisconsin-Green Bay (7-5). The Phoenix held Western to a .098 overall average, and allowed Western 53 kills to its 68. Western held a four-point lead twice in game two, but UWGB tied the score at 22-22 and climbed to a four-point win. Western hit only .053 to UWGB?s .227 in game three. The Phoenix were up by 14 at 22-8 before Western took advantage of four UWGB attack errors and posted six kills to end the game 30-20. Western?s hitting failed to improve in the final game as the team hit a match-low .043 to UWGB?s .208. Western held an early 7-2 lead before the Phoenix were able to tie the score at 14-14. The final tie of the game came at 26-26, and Western?s last lead was a 27-26 after a Jennifer Alexander (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) ace. Wisconsin-Green Bay clinched the match after back-to-back attack errors by Western and a Phoenix kill.Sauerwein collected her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 21 digs, and Olson added a season-high 16 kills. Trimpe notched 38 assists and Alexander added 18 digs.Jackie Rosen led UWGB with 19 kills, while Betty Slinger collected 54 assists and Sarah Rauen added 21 digs. Sauerwein and Yurs were joined on the All-Tournament Team by MVP Rosen (UWGB), Jill Smits (UWGB), Kelly Lopez (NDSU) and Central Michigan?s Mary Ochmanek.Western?s 2-1 record in the Amerihost Inn Classic mark head coach Kym McKay?s most successful tournament appearance since taking the reigns of the volleyball program in 2002.McKay and company will take the week off to prepare for its three-day, three-match home stand that will begin with Western?s first Mid-Continent Conference match of the season against Oakland on Friday, September 23. Valparaiso will visit Western Hall Saturday evening, and Southern Illinois-Carbondale will round out the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match.
