Volleyball Falls in Five Games to DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill. - Freshman Sarah Trimpe (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) and sophomore Amy Sauerwein (Belleville, Ill./Belleville Althoff Catholic) each recorded double-doubles, but it wasn?t enough for the Western Illinois University volleyball team to collect its first road win as the team fell 2-3 (25-30, 30-27, 30-28, 26-30, 15-17) against DePaul Tuesday night.Western (2-6) opened the match with a game-one loss that featured 11 ties and four lead changes. DePaul (3-6) allowed Western just nine kills in 39 attempts to its 19 kills in 55 attempts. The Blue Demons recorded a .200 hitting percentage against Western?s .051.Western came out on fire for the second game and took a commanding 22-13 lead with the help of five kills from junior Patty Melinauskas (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). Western never relinquished its lead in game two despite DePaul coming within one point at 28-27. Western clinched the game 30-27 after back-to-back attack errors by DePaul.Game three was back-and-forth from the first serve, with Western and DePaul fighting closely for the second win of the match. Western increased its lead to 18-14, the biggest of the game, after two DePaul errors and a kill by current Mid-Con Defensive Player of the Week Jenna Yurs (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards/Elgin C.C.). Western recorded 12 kills in the game to the Blue Demons? 19, but hit .222 compared to DePaul?s .196.Sauerwein tallied five of her 12 total kills in game four, yet DePaul held Western to .146 compared to its match-high .341. Western managed to catch up with the Blue Demons twice to tie the score, but was unable to ever gain the lead after being down as many as eight points in the game.Yurs stepped up in game five with five kills, however Western was only able to hold a two-point lead early on despite 11 tied scores. Western was up 15-14 when DePaul tied the score on one of its 14 kills in the game. The Blue Demons went on to clinch the match after a Western attack error was followed by another DePaul kill.The loss marked the second in a row in a five-game, extra-points match for Western Illinois since falling 2-3 to Southern Mississippi Saturday.Trimpe?s double-double (46 assists, 10 digs) was her third this season, and Sauerwein?s was her fifth (12 kills, 19 digs). Melinauskas finished the night with 13 kills and four digs, and sophomore Ashley Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Effingham [Ill.]) collected a team-high 14 kills. Freshman Monique Houston (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) tallied six kills and 22 digs, and junior libero Jennifer Alexander (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) posted 23 digs and two kills. Yurs notched nine blocks and 11 kills while hitting a team-high .276.DePaul?s Mandy Moorberg led the Blue Demons with 21 kills and 12 digs, and Alyson Zavitz added 19 kills. Maureen Zigulich led DePaul?s defense with 23 kills and Mandi Caputo recorded 71 assists in the five-game match.Western will return to the road this weekend and look to pick up its first road win at the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament Friday-Saturday. Fourth-year head coach Kym McKay?s squad will face North Dakota State and Central Michigan along with host UWGB in the two-day tournament.
