Leathernecks cruise past Eureka College, Secure 19th Win of the Season

All nine Leathernecks saw action in Monday’s non-league finale and each contributed to the point total.

MACOMB, Ill. – Nine Leathernecks saw action in Monday's non-league finale and each contributed to the point total, as the Western Illinois women's basketball team defeated Eureka College, 98-46, inside of Western Hall Monday night (Feb. 12).

The decision marked the Leathernecks' 19th win of the season.

"I'm thankful for Eureka coming over and letting us get a game in," said head coach JD Gravina. "It was nice to get up and down the court and play some relaxed offense. I thought we did a good job of having fun with the game. Now it is time to spring towards the finish, which starts with Saturday against a really good South Dakota State team."

The Leathernecks sparked the game with an 11-0 run, and went on to limit Eureka to just three points at the quarter's end.

By the half, Western's advantage swelled to 50-13.

The final box captured every Leatherneck contributing at least seven points, with Morgan Blumer leading the way with a game-high 18. Taylor Higginbotham (15), Emily Clemens (12) and Krishna Merriman (12) rounded out the team's double-digit scorers.

For Merriman, the decision also marked a career-high in points, minutes (22), field goals made (five), field goals attempted (seven) and blocks (one).

Western finished the evening shooting 46.2 percent from the floor (36-for-78), while holding Eureka to a season-low 25.0 percent (18-for-72).

Saturday's contest (Feb. 17), also billed as Senior Day, will mark the team's last regular season tilt inside Western Hall. Tip-off versus South Dakota State is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (CST).
