Clemens Garners espnW National Player of the Week Honors

The senior point guard averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 4.5 rebounds over the two-game span.

MACOMB, Ill.—Western Illinois senior point guard Emily Clemens has been named the espnW 'National Player of the Week', the organization announced Tuesday (Dec. 26).

"I love how competitive Emily is," said head coach JD Gravina. "She has always been overlooked because of her size, and was extremely under recruited coming out of high school. She has proven again and again that she is one of the top point guards in the nation. Her competitiveness helped lead us to the win against a nationally ranked opponent in Stanford. Emily and our team love to play the role of world beaters and always have a chip on their shoulder."

Clemens also earned her first Summit League 'Player of the Week' this season, which also marked the sixth of her career. She also joins Steph Paluch (South Dakota State, NCAA, Dec. 16, 2013) and Allison Arens (South Dakota, ESPNW, Jan. 2, 2017) as the only Summit League players to win a national player of the week award.

The Muscatine, Iowa notched a season-high 26 points, four rebounds and four assists in the monumental 71-64 win at No. 18 Stanford (Dec. 18). The win marked the first-ever victory over an AP Top-25 team in program history, as well as the Cardinal's first home loss of the season. In that contest, Clemens also became the all-time career assist leader in program history, as she broke Jolene Hanig's (1988-91) record of 542. The 5-foot-4 point guard currently has 554 assists and is also the program's all-time leader in free throws made with 455 thus far.

She followed up with nine points, nine assists, and five rebounds at Gonzaga. Over the week, she averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 4.5 rebounds.

Clemens is the reigning Summit League 'Player of the Year' and was also tabbed the league's 'Preseason Player of the Year.' The senior guard was also one of 20 players nationally to be named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Preseason Watch List, which goes to the top point guard in the country.

She currently leads the league in assists per game (8.2), steals per game (3.7), minutes per game (36.4) and free throws (68). Her 16.1 points per game are the third-most in The Summit League, behind fellow teammate Taylor Higginbohtam (17.2), who is second.

The senior point guard also ranks second in the nation with 107 assists thus far, and also ranks in the top-10 nationally in total steals (48/fifth), free throws made (fifth), steals per game (3.7/ninth) and assists per game (8.2).
