Richardson Stepping Down as Head Volleyball Coach

Kelly Richardson is stepping away from her position as head coach of the Western Illinois University volleyball team.

MACOMB, Ill. - Kelly Richardson is stepping away from her position as head coach of the Western Illinois University volleyball team, the department announced Friday (June 1).

"I would like to thank Dr. Jack Thomas, Danielle Surprenant and the entire WIU athletic administration for giving me the opportunity coach volleyball here at Western. This has been an amazing three years, and my family and I couldn't have felt more loved and welcomed in Macomb," said Richardson. "This has been a very hard decision, but one that is best for my family and I at this time. I am forever grateful for the lifelong relationships we've made while in this community and am proud to have been a part of Leatherneck Nation. The future is bright for WIU volleyball, and I look forward to following this very talented team's success."

Richardson recently completed her third season at WIU, guiding the Leathernecks to their most wins since 2013. Mackenzie Steckler crowned the 2017 slate as an All-Summit League honorable mention to mark WIU's first postseason honoree in four seasons.

"I am thankful for Kelly's contributions to our volleyball program over the last few years," said interim director of athletics Danielle Surprenant. "This team has displayed continued success in the classroom and on the court, and we are appreciative of the strides Kelly has made in those efforts. I wish her all the best moving forward."

A national search for Richardson's successor will begin immediately.
