Leathernecks Fall To South Dakota At Home

Western drops to 11-5 overall on the season.

MACOMB, Ill. – In a rematch of last year's Summit League regular season title game, the Western Illinois University women's basketball team (11-5, 1-1) played host to South Dakota (11-5, 3-0) at Western Hall Thursday evening, where it dropped the contest, 82-58.

Three Leathernecks scored in double figures with Morgan Blumer leading the attack with 14 points and eight rebounds. Emily Clemens added 13 points and six assists, while Taylor Higginbotham tabbed 12 points and two boards.

Olivia Braun finished the evening with seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

The visiting Coyotes hopped out to an early 5-0 advantage at the start of the first quarter, and maintained their advantage through the midpoint of the second frame. The Leathernecks were trailing, 23-17, with 7:24 to go before halftime, when Blumer singlehandedly sparked a 6-0 run to tie things at 23-all.

The final stalemate of the evening saw the scoreboard locked at 27-all, and the Coyotes entered the break with a 32-27 edge.

USD embarked on a 15-0 run to start the second half, and held a double-digit edge through the final horn.

Both teams shot above 40 percent from the floor, but extra attempts – the Yotes recorded 18 additional shots – proved to be the difference. South Dakota went 32-for-69 (46.4 percent) from the field, which included a 15-for-38 performance from beyond the arc, while WIU shot 21-for-51 (41.2 percent) and 9-for-25, respectively.

Western Illinois returns to Western Hall this Saturday in a 4:30 tip-off versus Oral Roberts on Jan. 6.
