Western Illinois Volleyball Announces 2017 Schedule

The Leathernecks are slated to play 15 games in Macomb, including two non-league home tournaments

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois head volleyball coach Kelly Richardson announced the Leathernecks' 2017 schedule Tuesday (June 20). WIU is slated to play 15 total home matches, including two home tournaments.
 
"We are very excited about our 2017 schedule. We will be hosting two tournaments here in Macomb, which will be an excellent opportunity for our kids to get quality time on our home floor," said Richardson. "We are also looking forward to the community being able to see this 2017 squad early on in the season."
 
Western kicks off the season Aug. 25-26 with the first of its two home tournaments, the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational. The Leathernecks are slated to face Manhattan, Chicago State and Evansville over the two days of competition.
 
WIU then heads to Birmingham, Alabama, for UAB's tournament Sept. 2-3 where the Leathernecks will play matches against Austin Peay, Charleston Southern and UAB. The Leathernecks then play a single non-league game at Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 4 before heading to Charleston, Illinois for Eastern Illinois' tournament for three more matches Sept. 8-9 against Chicago State, Alabama A&M and EIU.
 
After the Leathernecks play host to Saint Louis on Sept. 12, Western will host its second home tournament of the season, the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational, on Sept. 15-16 to conclude non-league action where it will face Valparaiso, Drake and McNeese State inside Western Hall.
 
Summit League play begins with trips to South Dakota (Sept. 22) and Oral Roberts (Sept 24). WIU then plays three straight league contests at home against Omaha (Sept. 29), IUPUI (Oct. 1) and South Dakota State (Oct. 6).
 
The remainder of the schedule incudes five home matches and six matches on the road, all of which are Summit League contests. The Leathernecks play host to South Dakota (Oct. 20), Oral Roberts (Oct. 22), Fort Wayne (Nov. 7), North Dakota State (Nov. 10) and Denver (Nov. 12) for their final home contests, and play at Fort Wayne (Oct. 8), Denver (Oct. 13), North Dakota State (Oct. 15), IUPUI (Oct. 24), Omaha (Oct. 27), South Dakota State (Nov. 4) to conclude their away schedule.
 
"With a large group of upperclassmen returning and a very talented group of newcomers, we are expecting big things this fall. This group is motivated and is a true representation of the team culture we're building here with Leatherneck volleyball," concluded Richardson.
