Five Programs Record Perfect Score in 2015-16 APR

Every Western Illinois sports program surpasses NCAA multi-year benchmark

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the ninth straight year, Western Illinois University Athletics surpassed the NCAA requirements in all sports for the multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). The NCAA office announced on Wednesday (May 10) the multi-year rates for all Division I institutions.

Five sport programs scored a perfect 1,000 APR for the 2015-16 academic year – men's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's swimming, and women's tennis.

The multiyear number is the average APR score of the four-year cohort spanning 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16. The APR is calculated as follows:
• Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
• A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's APR.
• In addition to a team's current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.

The 19 sports programs combined for 14 combined perfect scores in 2015-16 between the eligibility/graduation and retention categories.

"Our teams' APR scores are a window into one of the core objectives as a department, to graduate student-athletes and prepare them for future success," said Director of Athletics Matt Tanney. "Academic achievement is a daily conversation with our student-athletes, and we'll continue to use this data to evaluate and enhance further opportunities for growth and improvement."
