Leathernecks Top Mastodons To Win Back-To-Back League Matches

Shalyn Greenhaw recorded her second consecutive double-double to help the Leathernecks beat Fort Wayne.

MACOMB- Ill.- The Western Illinois volleyball team topped Fort Wayne, 3-1, in Western Hall. With the win, the Leathernecks have put together back-to-back league wins, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 2013 season.

Western came out strong and won the first two sets of the match. Fort Wayne took the third set, but the Purple and Gold won the fourth to clinch the match. The match win surpasses the Leathernecks' league win totals in 2015 and 2016 seasons combined.

"At the end of the match in the locker room, I told them 'As a team, you hope to play your best volleyball at the end of the season' and that is what they are doing. That is a huge step for our team and our program and what we are trying to accomplish here at Western. That is all on our girls. That is them putting themselves on the line and deciding that they were going to go get a win," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "I could not be more proud of a team as I am right now. It was an incredible defensive effort tonight. Especially in the fourth set, we weren't going to let anything hit. We saw the fire and the drive that we wanted to see out of them tonight. To be able to put together two conference wins back-to-back is a huge milestone for our program."

Fort Wayne jumped out to a 8-4 lead in the first set and eventually 17-11, but the Leathernecks stormed back to pull within one. Consecutive kills by Melanie Patenaude made the score 22-21 in favor of the Mastodons. Fort Wayne made it 24-21, but two kills recorded by Mackenzie Steckler and an attacking error by Elizabeth Fuerst put Western ahead, 25-24, but the Mastodons tied it back up at 25. Western took the set after a Shalyn Greenhaw kill and an attacking error by Fort Wayne.

The second set went Western's way as the Leathernecks fired off the first four points of the game. The Mastodons tied the set up at 10, but WIU won the next three points to go up 13-10. The Leathernecks forced a Fort Wayne timeout after winning five of six points putting Western up 18-13. A Greenhaw kill ended the set at 25-20. The third set did not go the Leathernecks way as the Mastodons took it, 25-20. The Leathernecks were on top, 14-11, but Fort Wayne won six of seven points to put Fort Wayne up 16-14. Western kept the game close, but Fort Wayne took it 25-20.

After being down 10-6, Western won five-straight points because of kills by Steckler and Sanders and three attacking errors by Fort Wayne. After taking the lead 11-10, the Leathernecks never got behind for the rest of the set. Four points went the Leathernecks way, thanks to two Cassie Hunt aces.

Steckler led the team with 15 kills while hitting an impressive .458 percentage. Greenhaw recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs. Jaime Johnson recorded 36 assists, while Hunt recorded 14. Grove recorded 19 digs.

The Leathernecks are looking to win three matches in a row for the first time since 2012 against North Dakota State on Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.
