Leatherneck Athletics Records Second-Highest Semester GPA

Student-athletes combined for a 3.15 cumulative GPA during the Fall 2016 semester

MACOMB, Ill. – Upon completion of the Fall 2016 semester, Leatherneck student-athletes combined to tie for the second-highest cumulative grade point average in the last 20 years. Western Illinois Athletic Director Matt Tanney announced a cumulative GPA of 3.15 among the near 400 student-athletes.

In Spring 2010, the Leathernecks combined for a 3.19 GPA, and last fall's average of 3.15 tied the Fall 2009 mark.

The overall semester GPA also surpassed the University's GPA of 3.008, the 19th consecutive semester GPA higher than the WIU student body.

Western also set records for percentage of student-athletes with a 3.0 or better and who earned semester honors (3.60 or higher). Every sports team finished with a 2.88 GPA or higher, and 13 teams cleared the 3.0 semester GPA mark. In all, 243 of the 381 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher. Thirty-one Leathernecks earned a perfect 4.0 for the Fall 2016 semester.

"Leatherneck student-athletes continue to perform at a high level academically, as reflected in the near record-high GPA for the fall semester. A continued emphasis on academic excellence among our student-athletes will remain a cornerstone of our athletics programs, and in alignment with the university's core values," said Tanney.

Women's tennis earned the highest semester team GPA mark at 3.601 – its sixth straight semester above a 3.40 GPA - while men's soccer was the highest on the men's side at 3.267.

Baseball set a program record at 3.164, the second-highest average among the men's team.
