Highlights from the 2015-16 Season

Leathernecks recap of the past year takes on a different look

In recent years, Western Illinois Athletics has recapped the highlights of the sports season with a Top 15 in '15 or Top 14 in '14. While compiling a list for the 2015-16 season, it was difficult to limit to just 16 items. So that's why the list for this year will be revealed a little differently.

Over the next few weeks, Leatherneck Athletics will recap the main highlights from five different categories: Academics, Athletic Season Accomplishments, Record Setting Performances, Newsworthy Announcements, and Single Game Heroics.

In the Single Game Heroics category, WIU Athletics will give fans the opportunity to vote via social media on their favorite memory from the 2015-16 season in a bracket-style format. More information on the bracket voting will be announced in the near future.

We thank you for your support during the 2015-16 season and cannot wait to see what excitement is in store for the upcoming year.

As always, Go Leathernecks!

Academics
-- The Athletic Department posts the third-highest GPA (dating back to 1998) during the Fall 2015 semester at 3.09. The student-athletes bested that mark in Spring 2016 with a cumulative 3.12 GPA.

-- Women's soccer player Victoria Kappel became the first Western Illinois female student-athlete to receive the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She joins six other Leatherneck student-athletes all-time to earn the award.

No NCAA Division I FCS institution could nominate more than two student-athletes for consideration, and Western saw both its nominees chosen for the prestigious award.

-- Ten Leatherneck student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference throughout the 2015-16 year.

-- Jacob Judd and David Griffith, both sophomores on the football team, were voted CoSIDA Academic All-District.
