2017 Fighting Leatherneck Softball Schedule Set

Western Illinois is slated to play in 51 games during the 2017 campaign, nine at home

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois head softball coach Holly Van Vlymen, who enters her 12th year at the helm, announced the 2017 schedule on Wednesday (Nov. 30). The Leathernecks are slated to play in 51 games this spring, nine of which will be contested at home at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
 
The Purple and Gold open the campaign with three consecutive tournaments in February, beginning with the Total Control Sports Invitational hosted by UIC on Feb. 10-12 in Rosemont, Ill. The following weekend (Feb. 18-19), the Leathernecks travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic hosted by Western Kentucky. The Central Arkansas Tournament closes out the month on Feb. 24-26.
 
The Leathernecks head to Southern Illinois for the Coach B Classic on March 4-5.
 
Five games at the Memphis Softball Tournament on March 10-12 kick off spring break for the Leathernecks. Play continues at Murray State for a March 15 doubleheader, before the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by UT Martin, closes the road swing on March 17-19.
 
Western Illinois welcomes South Dakota to Macomb for the opening weekend of Summit League play on March 25-26.
 
WIU hits the road again for six-straight league games, beginning with Omaha on April 1-2 and Fort Wayne on April 8-9. The road swing continues with a doubleheader at SEC-member Missouri on April 11.
 
The Leathernecks then return home for two-straight weekends, beginning with IUPUI on April 14-15 and defending Summit League Champions North Dakota State on April 22-23.
 
On April 26, WIU heads to Iowa City for a midweek tilt against Iowa before playing a doubleheader against Iowa State on April 29. Western closes the regular season and Summit League play at South Dakota State on May 6-7.
 
The top six regular season teams will compete at The Summit League Championship on May 10-14 in Fargo, N.D., hosted by the Bison.
