Leatherneck Women’s Golf Concludes Action in the 2015 Cardinal Classic

Sophomore Alex Krehbiel fired a career-best 74 in Tuesday’s final round.

YORKTOWN, Ind. – The Western Illinois women's golf team wrapped up action in Ball State's Cardinal Classic on Tuesday (Sept. 22). The Fighting Leathernecks finished the two-day, three-round event, which took place at The Players Club, in 11th place with a score of 940 (318-309-313).

"Overall our team had multiple great individual performances at Ball State this week," said head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Allison Farrell and Alex Krehbiel both carded career-best, single-round scores. During today's final round, Alex recorded an eagle before getting a birdie on the final hole of the day to lead our team. Allie, Jessica, Alex and Allison also all achieved personal best 54-hole totals. Our team goal was to finish in the top 10 and we were close, just missing our mark by one spot. We'll continue to refine our short game and eliminate trouble holes in preparation for Toledo. Overall the field was incredibly strong and our team had a solid weekend."

Senior Allison Farrell and sophomore Allie Leingang each tied for 38th place with marks of 233 to lead WIU in the tournament. Farrell used scores of 75, 76 and 82, while Leingang recorded a 78, 77 and 78 during the three rounds.

Tying for 51st place overall with scores of 237 were sophomores Jessica Schultz and Alex Krehbiel. Schultz hit an 81 in round one before tallying a 77 and 79 in rounds two and three, respectively. Krehbiel improved in each round of the invite, opening with an 84 before carding marks of 79 in round two and a career-best 74 in the third and final round.

Rounding out WIU's top five was senior Julie Whalen who finished in a tie for 77th with a three-round score of 254 (86-83-85).

Women's golf is next in action on Oct. 5-6 with Toledo's Rocket Classic in Clinton Ohio.
