Leathernecks Drop Match to Missouri State Sunday

Victoria Kappel compiles a season-high seven saves in defeat

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team concluded their four-match road series on Sunday, September 20, against Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri. The Leathernecks dropped the match to the Bears by a score of 2-0 to fall to 1-7-0 on the season.

"How we didn't get something from that game is beyond the scope of comprehension," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "We hit the crossbar twice, we had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed, and we missed a stone cold sitter from two yards out. We got punished on a bad mistake for the initial goal, fair enough. We can't run from that."

The Bears got on the board in the third minute when Brooke Prondzinski got past the Western defense and took a shot from eight yards out off of an assist from Lauren Fussell for the first goal of the match.

Western's Meagan Wilson attempted to respond in the eighth minute, but her header went wide.

In the 11th minute, Victoria Kappel would be called upon to make the first of her five first-half saves following a MSU shot on goal. Kappel would also make back-to-back saves in the 17th and 19th minutes to stop Missouri State from extending their lead.

Western's next chance to score came behind the foot of Daniela Salinas, but her shot hit the cross bar.

Kappel continued her powerhouse performance in goal and made two more saves before the end of the half. At the end of 45 minutes, Missouri State held a narrow 1-0 lead.

In the 52nd minute, Prondzinski found the back of the net for the second time off of an assist from Brooke Zimmerman to extend the Bears lead to 2-0.

"The second goal was harsh as we were on top of them it's against the run of the play," added Flogaites. "You must give credit to Prondzinski, she is a real finisher and puts away chances when they present themselves."

WIU's Madeline Edwards looked to bring the score within one, but her header hit the post. Six seconds later, she tried again but this time her shot was blocked.

The Bears strengthened their attack in the 63rd minute, but were no match for Kappel and the Leatherneck defense. Following Kappel's sixth save, Prondzinski attempted to make her third goal of the night but the Leatherneck defense came on strong and were credited with the save. A few seconds later, Kappel stepped in to make her seventh and final save of the day.

Western's best chance to score came in the 70th minute off of a header from Carly Hoffman that was right on target, but saved by MSU's keeper.

Both teams would exchange chances for the rest of the match, with both squads taking eight shots apiece in second half. The Bears went on to take the match by a score of 2-0.

"The second half was our best futbol all year, and to have nothing to show for it results wise is a tough feeling to swallow right now. The score doesn't reflect it but we took a massive step towards solving some of our issues," continued Flogaites. "This is the best 1-7 team I've ever seen. Next week is massive in every way and we will be ready to pounce. You cannot fault the players, they were excellent and gave everything to the match, credit to them."

The Purple and Gold will return home to begin Summit League play against Fort Wayne on October 2 at 3 p.m.
