Late second half surge not enough as the Leathernecks fall to Kansas City 2-0

MACOMB, Ill. -
The Western Illinois women's soccer team fell to Kansas City by a score of 2-0 on Sunday, August 30, in Macomb. With the loss, the Leathernecks move to 1-2-0 on the year, while Kansas City improves to 3-1-0.

"I didn't think it was an attractive game from either squad," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "We never seemed to find any continuity in the game. It's a shame that we always allow these soap opera type leads to happen before we decide to play. Within the last 15 minutes, we decided we wanted to play and be more of a threat, but we lacked consistency. There were nice individual moments, but we're not cohesive enough right now. We have work to do and we're going to get it done."

The 'Roos took the lead early in the first half when Emily Herndon scored the first goal of the match off a penalty kick in the ninth minute.

Kansas City would take two more shots on goal in the 10th and 13th minute, but could not get the ball past senior goalkeeper Victoria Kappel. Kappel would end the day with five saves for the Leathernecks.

Western's attack started heating up, as Meagan Wilson and Daniela Salinas each took a shot in the 17th minute. The Leathernecks best chance to score came from Madeline Edwards, as she took two consecutive shots on frame in the 18th minute, but ultimately could not get the ball past UMKC's keeper.

It would be a back-and-forth physical battle between both sides for the rest of the first half, but neither squad was able to score. Kappel would be called upon to make another big save before the end of the period, and the teams would headed into intermission with a score of 1-0.

In the 53rd minute, Kansas City's Lexie Howard was able to breakaway and score the 'Roos second goal of the day. Edwards quickly responded in the 54th minute by taking another dangerous shot on goal, but Kansas City's goalkeeper was there to make the stop.

Western's best chance to score in the second half came in the 78th minute when freshman Caitlin Rerucha broke through Kansas City's defense and made a 55-yard run before taking a shot on goal but couldn't find the back of the net.

Skyler Jessop would take WIU's final shot to try to bring the score within one in the 85th minute, but the 'Roos would hang on to take the match 2-0.

The Purple and Gold will be back in action next Sunday, September 6, as they take on Western Michigan at 1 p.m. in Macomb to wrap up a three match home swing.
