Sammy Marshall Selected as The Summit League's NCAA 'Woman of the Year' Candidate

Marshall is one of 147 league selections for the 2015 NCAA 'Woman of the Year'.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sammy Marshall, a 2015 graduate of Western Illinois University, was named as one of 147 final candidates for the NCAA 'Woman of the Year' Award the NCAA announced on Thursday (July 23). Marshall was nominated by Western Illinois and chosen by The Summit League to represent the league before the Woman of the Year selection committee selects the top 10 from each of the divisions.

The Naperville, Illinois native joins 56 other Division I student-athletes and 18 fellow softball student-athletes on the list of selections. The 147 honorees is the most in the history of the award.

Marshall became Western Illinois' all-time hits leader in 2015, capping a career which saw her break the stolen base, runs scored, and batting average record at WIU. The shortstop also sits atop The Summit League's record book in batting average and stolen bases. Her career .456 average placed her in the top 10 in NCAA history.

After graduating in May of 2015, Marshall signed a professional contract with the Chicago Bandits, becoming the sixth WIU softball player to turn professional after being just the third to be drafted just one month prior.

The 30 candidates for the 2015 NCAA 'Woman of the Year' Award will be announced in early September before nine finalists (three from each division) will be selected later that month. The NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced on Oct. 18 in Indianapolis.
