Western Illinois Athletics To Discontinue Men’s Tennis Program

Leathernecks will cease program effective at the end of the 2015-16 season

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois University Athletics announced the intercollegiate men's tennis program will be discontinued following the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.

"We will focus our efforts on assisting the student-athletes during this transitional period. We remain committed to their success in the classroom and on the court," said interim athletic director Matt Tanney. "If they elect to transfer and further their tennis careers at another institution, we will assist in that process too."

Western posted a 0-20 record last year, and was 2-36 over the past two seasons. The tennis program spends most of their practices and plays home matches (January-March/April) at the indoor facility in Galesburg until the weather permits, outdoor practice and competition are at the Brophy courts on-campus.

Leatherneck Athletics will offer 19 intercollegiate varsity sports starting in 2016-17, 10 women's and 9 men's.
